Regular single-mode fibers experience uncontrolled changes in light polarization due to external factors like temperature fluctuations and fiber movement. PM fiber solves this issue through a specialized construction that induces birefringence using stress rods between the core and cladding.
Three typical PM fiber structures – Panda, Bow Tie, and Elliptical – create two orthogonal linear polarized modes with slow and fast principal optical axes, as shown in the figure below.
